6 GOOD REASONS TO CROSS <\/strong>TO<\/strong> BRAZIL BEFORE <\/strong>CONTINUING<\/strong> TO THE CARIBBEAN.<\/strong><\/p>\n

… because the goal of offshore cruising is not to sail from one side of the ocean to the other, in the middle of hundreds of other boats, only to end up \u00a0in an overcrowded anchorage or marina.<\/p>\n

3 \/ The Brazilian people are amongst the most welcoming <\/strong>people<\/strong> in the world<\/strong>, with an unparalleled zest for life that nothing seems to be able to change. Once in Brazil, there is a whole continent to be discovered, as well as, a carnival without equal in the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

4 \/ The cost of living in Brazil is cheap for everyday products<\/strong> (restaurant, supermarket, fuel, hotel, taxi, inland travel), half the price of the Caribbean or less.<\/p>\n

5 \/ The boat can stay<\/strong> for <\/strong>up to two years in a <\/strong>safe<\/strong> place where the risk of cyclones is non-existen<\/strong>t and the climate is constant all year round.<\/p>\n

6 \/ When it will <\/strong>finally<\/strong> be time to leave Brazil for the Caribbean, you will experience one of the easiest and most enjoyable sailing <\/strong>passages imaginable<\/strong>. Thanks to the favourable wind and current, you will be able to beat all your speed records\u2026You will cross the equator for the second time, which is always a great moment. On your way north you will be able to enjoy exceptional stopovers before leaving the country (such as the island of Len\u00e7ois, an extraordinary little paradise in the dunes) and the Devil\u2019s Islands, St Laurent du Maroni, and Suriname. All this before arriving in Tobago or Grenada, one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n

FALSE REASONS THAT CAN MAKE YOU HESITATE<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou <\/strong>will<\/strong> have to cross the doldrums and <\/strong>that\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0complicated!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The doldrums are a headache for offshore runners who tend to be in a hurry and cannot use their engines. For us bluewater cruisers, if we decide to motor between 24 and 36 hours due south on entering the area, we will quickly recover the SE trade winds and the crossing of the famous doldrums zone will be done with some refreshing showers under the squalls.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrazil is <\/strong>not a safe <\/strong>country.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

The violence and security issues in Brazil are concentrated in the \u201cfavelas\u201d and in 90% of all cases the offenders are involved in drug dealing. Problems with tourists, in particular involving sailboats, are much less frequent than in the Caribbean, and one can sail along the coast without fear, in complete safety.<\/p>\n

This is why it is difficult to understand the rush of some sailors to get to the Caribbean without first enjoying this extraordinary and exotic country! Once in the Caribbean, it will be very difficult to return to Brazil.<\/p>\n
